Marvin the Martian | What is the EPS? |
Additional Details Oh sorry - I meant what is Earnings Per Share.

|
Earnings Per Share. It is figured by taking the earnings and dividing that number by the number of shares outstanding. ex. company earned $1,000,000 last year. They have 100,000 shares outstanding= EPS is 10. |

EPS stands for Earnings Per Share. Basically are the earnings divided by the number of shares. |

Earnings Per Share is exactly what it means. It is the earnings per share of stock outstanding on that day.
For example, at the beginning of the year a company had 1,000,000 shares outstanding (meaning owned by anyone but the company). During the year, the company buys back 100,000 shares. That means there are now 900,000 shares outstanding.
If the companies profit was $1,080,000 for the year, the earnings per share would be $1.20 (1,080,000 / 900,000).
When you review financial statements of companies, then calculation is more complicated than what I used as an example. |

EPS is obtained by dividing the after tax profits by the total number of equity share holders. It represents the value added to the share holders when a firm declares its profit. If a firm makes 100 mn last year, 150 mn this year with the same number of 1mn share holders, then the share holders value has increased by 50 bucks per share due to increased profits. Decreasing profits mean the opposite to shareholders. Generally shares with consistent and increasing EPS will increase profits to investors. |

Earning Per Share. If you look at the bottom of an income statement for most US corporations, they will list specifically what the EPS is.
It is calculated by taking net income divided by the number of shares outstanding. |
