What time horizon do you have? If this is a long-term investment, the best thing to do is set up a well-diversified portfolio with bonds, domestic equities, foreign equities, emerging markets and REITs. Keep your costs VERY low...do NOT use a broker parading as a 'financial advisor' (his fees will kill you) and then stay the course. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, in other words. Rebalance as needed.
Figure out your risk tolerance which will tell you what % to put in each.
Or, simply buy a target retirement date fund from Vanguard.

As previously stated in another answer no investment can be safeguarded completely against loss. The return you achieve is usually linked to the risk involved ie greater risk greater return.
A good bet just now however is index trusts that attempt to match the market rather than beat it, therefore if the market rises so should your investment.
These are usuall relativley inexpensive to invest in and manage.
