Over the longer term, the stock market has provided better returns than real estate. Yes, there are some hot real estate markets which over a shorter term have provided better returns than some market indices, but speak to some of those stuck with some properties because of the sub-prime mess. Also with stocks you will be far more liquid and face much lower transactional costs. |

Well I don't know how much money you have to invest. If you have enough money for real estate then I'd go for real estate first. But why not both? Investing in the long term is definitely a sure way to build up wealth. |

If you are looking at long term wealth, then real estate maybe a better option.
However, as you have brought up the stock market in the same breath; it may be considered if you are willing to put in the effort to understand the rules of the game. But, you must realize that here you would be exposing your financial resources to the various risks of the environment.

Real estate is far safer and its growth in value much smoother. However, investment in the stock market can be more profitable, if you are lucky.
This balance of risk and potential reward, is the major principle in investing. |
