Actually for us common people who really have no time or background to do more than guess, if you invest in a mutual fund you almost can't go wrong. Find a no-load fund which means there is no up front fee to buy into the fund. There are a lot of funds available. I would advise picking a company that you recognize or know something about already. I do find that "growth" funds are great, volatile but really great for the returns. My own portfolio is actually doubling in value about every 7 years now.
