I agree that a stock mutual fund would be a mistake, given your short time horizon.

A CD would be a good idea, but it should promise you at least a 5% return. Otherwise, a high-yield internet savings account will give you just as much (for example, Emigrant Direct (5.05%), CapitalOne (4.75%), or ING Direct (4.5%). The only advantage to a CD is that the interest rate is fixed for the term -- it can't go lower or higher. With internet savings accounts, the bank is always free to lower (or raise) the rate.

A high interest CD

El Guapo
Venus is right - stocks, bonds and mutual funds are too risky for a 1 year investment. Stick with a CD - it's the highest interest you'll find for a short time period.

Most banks have CD specials for right around a year that can be as high as 5-6 %. That is what I would do if I was investing the money for 1 year.

A one year certificate of deposit should earn you around 5% on your $2,000 ($100), but you will be locked in for the full year. If you want liquidity- the ability to withdraw it in 11 months instead of 1 year, place the money in a money market at your bank or mutual fund.

The best return on that money is with a mutual fund. Try and find a low cost or no cost international fund. Fidelity offers about 15 of them. Expect a return of 10-15% in current market conditions based on level of risk.
