Social Security has to be near, or at, the top of the list for sure.

The current money printing frenzy ranks right up there.

social security certainly has to be up there near the top of the list. If I recall the government's own reported statistics correctly, the unfunded liabilities of the system (what they have promised but what there is currently no money to cover) is somewhere in the neighborhood of 11 trillion dollars to more than 30 trillion. But as much as that seems, it can not hold a candle to the unfunded liabilities of the medicare system which if I recall correctly is somewhere in the neighborhood of twice that amount.

The actual amounts are sort of up for grabs because they are confused by how the accounting is done. For example the government actually has stolen money from the SS trust fund and used it for other purposes so money that is supposed to be there actually is gone.

(I ran across this that even better explains the ss ponzi scheme)

The US Social Security system is the biggest ponzi scheme in the history of human civilization. It will destroy the nation. No question about it. The math is clear.

Unfortunately, it will melt down in my lifetime. Gonna be one fantabulous train wreck.

(Be sure to write and thank your Congressmen today.)

Hands down, it's government. And if you want the largest numbers of all time then it's the US government.

As mentioned already though, Social Security may be a purer definition.

It started with The King of Get Rich Quick, Charles Ponzi became a millionaire in six months by promising investors 50% return in 45 days on international postal coupon investments. He earned $15 million, which in 1920s terms was serious money. After Ponzi was caught, investors only received $5 million back.

But there is no doubt that no one has been even near to the recent Bernard Madoff’s scam.

The facts as we know them now are that Madoff spent decades building the biggest Ponzi scheme in history, bilking nonprofits, famous people, funds, banks, and countless others out of $50 billion.

The Rich and Famous as well as the everyday citizen have been bilked destroying lives. Maybe capital punishment is order for these type of crooks.

While many will say Social Security, if you look up the intent that social security was meant to be used for and the method, it was a very sound idea. However since the initial set up many things have ben added gone wrong, etc. I prefer to view social secuity as just another part of our income tax.
I always thought that Amway was the biggest Ponzi scheme in history but they have stayed in business and actually sell products. Back in the 80's there was a cosmetic company called Costcoff that ripped off thousands although it was more of a pryamid type scheme.
