What is the maximum no. of companies(stocks) that u maintain in ur portfolio at a time

The fact that I have both types of IRA accounts and also a non-IRA account means that I have different types of stocks in the different types of accounts. The regular IRA account contains mostly stocks that pay non-tax advantaged dividends. Companies such as LPs and REITs since the money is going to be fully taxed anyway when it is removed. The non-IRA account contains mostly stocks that I hope will generate long term capital gains. The Roth IRA account, since it will never be taxed contains sort of a mixture.

This makes for more stocks than I would normally have in a portfolio if I had only one subject to the same tax rules. Currently there are about 50 or 60, which is more than probably one should attempt to manage. But darn it, diversification accross so many business types, economies, and business sizes makes for a lot of stocks.

There is not a maximum. But the optimum is 15-20. Eventually you over hedge the sector risk and reward, bit like a unit trust.

The Chosen One
me myself i have approx 15 different stocks, including mutual funds these are actually several stocks in one fund...I recommend an online brokerage firm that has good beginner qualitys {like tutorials or an easy to understand set up}, i use zecco, better then schwab, etrade, etc. they are the only ones with free stock trades, no minumums..all the others will charge you fees for trading, but compare and see for yourself. Good luck and happy investing!

It really depends on the nature of your portfolio. Generally some of the stocks are included in the portfolio for investment purposes and these counters will not be churned very frequently.
As against this, some of the stocks will be included for trading purposes which require constant vigil and churning.
