What is the meaning of "Mutual Fund"?
This is a financial term is used for the purpose of investment in companies etc.

Firstd1mension
A mutual fund is when a Mutual Agency invests in a "portfolio" of stocks, often from various sectors. When you invest in a mutual fund, instead of buying shares in one stock, you're buying little bits of shares over a wide variety of stocks. The concept is, if you make large investments in a few companies, your investment's success depends on the success of that one business, so it's risky. With a mutual fund, if one of the stocks fail, it has only a minor impact on the mutual fund because it's composed of so many stocks, so your risk is more spread out. Mutual funds are considered relatively safe investments, where you don't stand much chance of making a fortune off of it, but there isn't much chance of losing your shirt either.

VIKRAM
A fund created by investors to invest in shares. it is proffesionaly managed. investors hardly face losses if invested for more then 3 years

I presume you are referring to the open ended mutual fund (as these are the most common).

An open-ended fund is a pooled investment company that raises money from shareholders and invests in a group of assets.

Mutual fund companies typically invest in stocks, bonds & cash equivalents (money market) with stock mutual funds being the most familiar/common.

Simply put it a pool of money contributed by different people(comparatively small amounts ) to be invested with the purpose of having a diversified portfolio.
I allows a small investor to have a diversified investment, which will allow him to have a better chance of good return for a comparatively low risk.

An open-ended fund operated by an investment company which raises money from shareholders and invests in a group of assets, in accordance with a stated set of objectives. mutual funds raise money by selling shares of the fund to the public, much like any other type of company can sell stock in itself to the public. Mutual funds then take the money they receive from the sale of their shares (along with any money made from previous investments) and use it to purchase various investment vehicles, such as stocks, bonds and money market instruments. In return for the money they give to the fund when purchasing shares, shareholders receive an equity position in the fund and, in effect, in each of its underlying securities. For most mutual funds, shareholders are free to sell their shares at any time, although the price of a share in a mutual fund will fluctuate daily, depending upon the performance of the securities held by the fund.
