It depends on the risk of the investment and if you're being compensated for that risk. That wouild be the risk=free rate, the yield on a treasury security like the 10-year bond, plus an equity risk premium. |

There are many strategies for buying and selling stocks, there is no single method that is best. What is most important is that you have a dicipline to follow your method and sticking to it.
In general, you should buy a stock using "technicals" and "fundamentals", sell a stock using "technicals" alone.
One easy to follow strategy is to buy a stock when its price exceeds a moving average - say 50 day moving average, and hold the stock for as long as the price stays above the moving average, and the moving average stays in an uptrend. Sell the stock when the price drops below the moving average or when the moving average is no longer in an uptrend. With this method, you have to be patient, there may be situations where the price will go far above the moving average, then come down near (or even slightly below) the moving average and reverse and continue the up trend going higher than previous high.
A variation of this method may be to buy when the price exceeds 50 day moving average, and hold as long as the price stays above a faster moving average - say 13 day moving average, and this moving average is in a up trend. Sell when the price falls below this 13 day moving average or the moving average is no longer in up trend. This method will allow you to lock in your gains earlier, but this may prevent you from geting the "bigger" gain unless you re-enter when the price pulls back to the slower moving average - 50 day - and bounces up; then you repeat your strategy again to add to your earlier gain. |

If you think the stock is undervalued by 20%, then sell when it is fairly valued. Prepare your exit strategy before you buy, then follow your playbook. |

It depends on your holding period. In short term trades of a few days, a small gain is acceptable. Longer holding periods should have larger gains.
Suppose you buy and sell 2 days later and make a 1% gain. If you do that every week for a year you made a 50% gain.
If you hold a stock for a year then you should look for 8-10 % minimum. Anything less doesn't justify your risk. |

The highest percentage achievable before the stock heads south. Some stocks I have owned have doubled in a single day while others take years. My general policy is to sell at a gain of 30% in a single year or a loass of 20% on the same timeline. The long-term creates a completely different opportunity. |
