The only way to get a "windfall" in a short period of time is by taking HUGE RISKS.
You will be either correct or lose. To double $5k, - black or red, you know right away, no commissions, or lose it all.

a small business idea is NOT for the short term. either you want a trip to vegas and have great luck for the short-term desire, or you are using the brains given to you by the almighty to use for the long-haul in a small business. if it's the latter, you don't even need to be here asking questions about what to do with 5k. if it's the former, hop on a greyhound bound to vegas and leave the driving to them. |

Importing something that is becoming popular in your location, but is available elsewhere is one compelling opportunity. But you have to know what you are doing, or have stumbled upon a hot trend, and there are risks that the trend fizzles or you overestimate demand at a given price.
The amount of the return you seek is a critical part of giving you an answer. Obviously buying a CD is the safest way to go, FDIC insured etc. But the return will be modest. How much risk are you willing to take, and do you have any specific knowledge you can bring to bear to gauge the risk of any particular kind of investment, better than the marketplace as a whole? That is the key to long term success in investing. Develop skills that let you find opportunities where you happen to know with reasonable certainty something better than the market can efficiently price it. |

Its not without some risk but find a stock that will pay a high dividend like an energy trust or REIT and invest just before the dividend payout, then sell it after. Carefull that the trading fees and taxes dont eat your profit. |
