What is the worst stock to own these days?

GM given the nice run up and the poor June sales performance.

All stocks are bad - except the ones that are going up at the moment.

Another interestion question. I am absolutely terrible at picking stocks that are worse to own. Every one I pick goes up in price. Every one. As one responder already mentioned, GM looks like an absolute disaster as does Ford. Watch them double in price. As another responder so aptly mentioned, it aint oils. I also have to wonder about Dell. Seems to me they are taking the same path that lead to the downfall of Gateway. It is bound to increase in price.

In my opinion, the worst stocks are stocks that everyone loves, but can't do that well forever. This contrasts to really horrible companies that everybody knows are doing horribly (e.g. GM, VG). Remember, don't confuse a stock with the company. They are two different things. My top two picks are "fads" - they are the RCA, Dutch tulip and bowling alley stocks of today that do great for a short period of time then flame out. Very, very few companies reinvent themselves to become even more successful than they were in the past.

My opinion of the worst stocks are:
CROX: Croc's shoeware. You've seen them. They're the plastic lovechild of Dutch clogs and gardening shoes. They are this decade's answer to Vans, Jelly Shoes and (insert fad here). The problem with fads is, as quick as they come and blanket the world, they disappear. This company, which is nearing the apex of its popularity, trades at a ridiculous 48x earnings. That means you need nearly 50 years in earnings to pay back its market cap. The writing is on the wall as global coverage is alerady starting to get saturated, cheap me-toos are popping up everywhere, and there is no obvious place for this company to expand its brand.

HLYS: Yet another fad stock. These are the shoes that have the pop-out wheels in the heels, propelling your pre-teens around the malls like Katyusha rockets on sugar highs. The only people more fickle than adults are children. This shoe is so-o-o-o-o-o-o two years ago and the cool kids have already moved on to something else. This one has already come way off its highs - bit still trades at 19x PE.

I'd avoid homebuilders and mortgage companies until the real estate market starts to turn around a bit. Specific stocks I'd avoid include AHM, KBH, DRH, and PHM.
