What is your personal opinion about the 2009 stock market?
East question:
Do you think shares have hit bottom yet?
I know they will be going up & down for a long time to come but is it safe to start investing in banks and business yet?
Also, With shares falling quickly after many negative reports (Including unemployment), Is is safe to buy shares now (Tuesday) or should I wait to see of they will they continue to fall?

Please do not go on a rant about you cannot predict the future, I am only trying to get others opinions (I already have mine).
Additional Details
Wow Mark- I never had my very own personal journalist before lol, thanks 2 all that answered and hopefully more will come.

I wouldn't say that I'm real bullish on the market short term, but if you're looking out a year or more, then now is a great time to be accumulating stocks. Like Kevin R, I went into the market heavy, in late November, and was lucky enough to catch a 40% bounce. Now I'm very slowly buying back in again. But I don't think that there's any rush. I think that earnings will be horrible and the market will continue to trend down. But I'm using this as an oppurtunity to buy. I'm not sure if we'll see any capitulation selling, like we did in October and November. Where the market falls 500-600 points in a day, but I wouldn't say that's impossible. I've got cash on the sidelines waiting to go in, and although I'm in no rush to put it to work, I will be dollar cost averaging it back in.

Usually when the market turns around it jumps 20%-30% in a few weeks, but I'm doubtful that it will happen this time. People are a little too leery to jump back into the market so quickly. So I think we'll go into a period of churning up and down for a month or two, without any real conviction in either direction. Although for the next few weeks the market will be dictated mostly by earnings. So it will almost certainly be down.

What this means is that you have a golden oppurtunity to be buying stocks right now. The market may go lower, but it shouldn't be anything dramatic, and the potential upside if the market does turn around in the second quarter is huge. I currently have small positions in 45 different stocks, across a very broad spectrum of companies. I'm slowly adding to those positions, and keeping an eye out for additional oppurtunities. I still don't like financials, although I own a small position in them. I own some infrastructure plays, but as I get a better idea of Obama's stimulus package I'll put money where I think that I'll get the best return with the least risk. I don't like gold, but I have some silver and copper stock. I like the fertilizer stocks and some heavy equipment stocks. Plus a few select industrials. I'm not concerned about dividends, but I hate companies with a lot of debt. Give me a reliable business, with positive cash flow, and minimal debt. I want companies that were good strong companies going into the downturn, have the cash to survive a sustained recession, and a business model that will be just as good when the market turns around. I also like some speculative companies that have huge potential, and a good balance sheet.

Start now to build a good balanced portfolio and you should finish the year with a decent profit, and be positioned to profit from a continued recovery in 2010.

i just put 4500 dollars in and i say buy when it down and yes i say we hit the bottom so 2009 going to be a better year

I'm bullish. Buying while everyone else is selling has me ahead of the market 15% since mid-November. I believe the market bottomed 11/21. If it didn't I'll keep right on buying. I'm currently adding to BAC (01/13/09) @ 13 or better.

There won't be a soon pop, but after a few weeks, a little rally based on Obama's spending plan. That will be shorlived however, in the face of real data. So, Dow will go to 7800 (retest lows), then rally to 10,400, then finish they year lower.

Take a look at the Japanese Stock market since its highs in 89. These high have not been challenged for 20 years. This is a very poossible out come for US stocks. Dividends are very important in these markets.

ENTN is the best stock this year because it is so cheap an it keeps going to really high amounts and it makes like 45.50 if your stock only goes up a penny!

The charts show we're at a bottom. It may take another month to start a long term rally. However, there's no economic indicator as of today that signals a reversal, perhaps in a month there will be.

I don't think we hit a bottom yet. Autos want more bailouts, banks still having trouble, steel's in trouble. AA kicks off a terrible earnings seaso wiuth a huge loss and more layoffs coming. I think we'll see 8k on the dow in a few weeks if not this week. let's see what oe does for Friday. I would only buy small blocks of shres in a company I really believed in a hurt economy. Average down and add more as it falls. Big caps with a good divi, low pe, and respected products will hold up better than most.
