What keeps a company like WAL-MART or EXXON from buying all the real estate up to create a monopoly?
What if they started to buy up houses and rent them out and then apartments now that they are cheap? Couldn't they eventually buy up most the real estate and have a monopoly? They could continue to grow off their investments in houses and buy more and more and more and more and more. What keeps this from happening economically?

Even those mega companies don't have enough money to buy enough real estate to create a monopoly.

Well for starters, a lot of people would have to be willing to sell. For seconds, why would they want to do that? Owning real estate commmercially is a huge headache and business endeavour all by itself, why would they want to go into a field they knew little or nothing about? I suppose it's theoretically possible, but as a practical matter it's kinda silly, bordering on the paranoid.

There are laws against monopolies in this country. Even though they do exist to an extent.

Wal-Mart is slowly trying to create a monopoly in the retail market. It still has a long way to go, but it has made tremendous inroads by keeping its prices low. Nothing could stop Wal-Mart. Monopoly laws were created during T. Roosevelt's anti-trust bust but those monopoly laws have changed over years.

The logical: that isn't what they do nor what they are good at. They stick to what the do well.

The practical: They do not have access to enough cash to do what you are suggesting.

You seem to be operating under the false assumption that "buying real estate" equals "making lots of money". In fact, in today's economy, exactly the opposite is true.

I'd expect a major corporation to go into the real estate investment business only if they were looking for some type of paper losses to get some tax breaks.
