Theoretically, what makes the prices of stocks go up and down is a market force in Economics known as "Supply and Demand".

> The law of Demand states that generally, the higher the price of a good/service, the less it will be demanded.

> The law of Supply states that generally, the higher the price of a good/service, the more it will be supplied.

Being the case, stock prices go up when they are demanded a lot,
which in turn causes the stock price to rise. There are a multitude of reasons as to why stock prices may be demanded a lot, usually in the short-term being that there was a recent announcement on its quarterly earnings or a recommendation on a news channel that the stock was worth investing in. That's why many *knowledgeable* investors do not invest in the short-term, but invest in the long-term. As Benjamin Graham put it, investing in the short-term is as unpredictable as a voting ballot box. In the long-term, stock prices are representative of all future cash flow earnings.

Stock prices are a product of supply and demand. There are many different motives for both buying and selling at any given time and at any given price.

Aggressive buying and selling makes prices go up or down. Don't be concerned about other people's motivations for the investing decisions they make. Don't allow small losses to grow into be large losses.

Hi, Moon,

Stock prices are just like the game "Tug of War."

You have a lot of people pulled on the rope by buying stocks. They are pulling stock prices "up."

You also have a lot of people on the other side of the rope pulling it the opposite way, by selling stocks. So they are pulling the price "down."

Throughout the trading day, the results keep changing. That's because people on one side can change their mind and stop buying or selling -- or even switch sides. People who are standing around kibbitzing can also decide to join one side or the other.

So the game never remains even.

Buyers buy because they think price will go up. Sellers sell because they think price will go down. People on sidelines don't care, don't know or are simply paying attention to other stocks.

Also, some people may sell stocks simply because they need the money for another reason, no matter what they think of its future prospects.

That's the broad view.

A lot of things can affect people's belief about whether a particular company's stock will go up or down -- its earnings, its products, its "sexiness" or lack thereof, and so on.

But mostly stocks go up and down because of overall economy.

Right now, of course, that's in bad shape, which is why the Dow has lost over 5000 points in a little over a year.

best, Rick

Greed and Fear are the two forces which move the stock market.
When people feel they can make a fast buck by buying a stock, the Greed makes the prices go up.
When people feel they will lose money by holding on to a stock, the Fear makes the prices go down.
