practically everything.
*Buybacks - show confidence
*Splits - takes away shares, adds more
*Industry / Sector News -All finacial took a major hit with the subprime mess
*Insider Buying/selin - They know more then we do
*Data - Consumer confidence, home sales, job growth...
*Analyst Opinion - Upgrades, Downgrades, Initiated.
*Earnings - What the company makes or loses in a quarter / year
This list can go on nearly forever. The "street" is very sensitive. |

Stocks can fluctuate (go up or down a bit for no obvious reason), move with the market (ie if the market goes sharply up or down it'll take most stocks along for the ride) or move on fundamental news-- earnings reports, the release of new products, the discovery of new drugs, analyst recommendations (or pans), news regarding similar companies, etc.
Don't worry about fluctuations, worry a bit about overall market conditions, and pay close attention to the fundamental state of a company. Remember that if cash flow is there everything else will eventually follow. |

Any kind of influential news can move a stock. Economic news can move almost the whole market. Interest rates and bond yields move stocks. |

Bad crop reports, bad weather - especially in off shore drilling areas, stocks splitting, and rumors of buyouts all influence stock prices. |

Demand for a stock moves it's price. If demand is greater than supply... price goes up, if demand is less than supply, price goes down. Look at current quarterly earnings, annual earnings , new product or management or condition effecting the environment that the company operates in, the supply and demand of the stock itself, is the company a leader or a laggard in it's industry? What is the industry that the company operates in doing overall, and last but most important, what is the market doing overall.... is it in consolidation, or is it breaking out of a base?... (research CANSLIM and you will go far grasshopper) |

I disagree with the previous answers regarding supply and demand. The supply side really doesn't come into play. So demand as it relates to supply is not very relevant either.
Do you go out and buy Wal-Mart stock because you think there will be less of it available the next day? Do you think that as you buy more Wal-Mart stock the demand increases thereby reducing supply causing the price to go up?
No, you buy Wal-Mart stock because you think the price is going to go up.....or maybe because you think the company will become more profitable and pay higher dividends....or maybe because you think other people think the price will go up. The true supply of Wal-Mart stock did not change yesterday but the price dropped almost 1% and for every seller there was a buyer (or a market maker). Where did the supply/demand imbalance occur?
Human emotions and future expectations move stock prices.
Stock prices are heavily influenced by fear and greed. When there is an imbalance between fear and greed the price moves. Human emotions and future expectations are much much more of a factor than true supply and demand issues. |

Stocks work just like basic economics. Supply and Demand. When the demand for a stock goes up, the increased buying volume will drive the stock up. The opposite is true for selling stock. When investors start dumping their shares, the stock price will drop. The price usually drops faster than it rises because people often get nervous and sell (the wrong thing to do).
Institutional investors like mutual fund and hedge funds have significant control over a stocks price. |
