You need to know your risk tolerance. This site has links to risk tolerance tests:

It may be that you should consider this your emergency account and not take risks with it.

If you have $12,000 sitting a checking account and you do not need it for anything of high importance at this time, then I would suggest looking into some form of investments right now. Now I notice a lot of people telling you to go safe, or do this or that, and I won't tell you this. Why? Because every investment has to fit the investors overall goals. My first advice is pay off any outstanding debt you have (credit cards, bills, ect.) If you are completely all out of debt then GREAT!!! You are way ahead of many other people in this country.
In order to figure out what you should do with your money at this point will take some time in understanding more about your personal situation. I would be happy to give you advice, but I only like to make sure I am giving the right advice. If you are serious about investing then send me an email at robert.layer@rbc.com and I will give you some very simple questions to answer. From the answers you provide, I will be able to provide you with an accurate answer to your question.

Make THE BEST investment you can:
Invest in yourself and in your own education.

Once you have that knowledge, no one can ever take it away.

Using that money for your education will reduce the stress on yourself and your family.

Your loans will be reduced by that much.

Other than paying back loans, you can do more important things with your money.

AND you'll be a much stronger candidate for other loans such as mortgages or personal loans.

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it

My advice... Use the money in you IRA as a down payment on some real estate.

With the extra $2k. Invest in a home business

Check out my YouTube video for my experiences (good and bad) with various home businesses http://youtube.com/watch?v=i5ZMgycKRPQ
