There is no greater posession than a house paid off. If you own the house free and clear you will be able to live on less. You won't have to make so much money. Too many people have giant mortgages thinking that the tax write-off (the interest) is greater than no write-off. Not true, a giant mortgage forces people to make great wages with high income taxes.
A house paid off is still a burden with insurance, taxes, utilities, upkeep and expansion. A house paid off may determine if you can live on $11 or $27 per hour; social security alone or if you must supplement.

Rookieguy, Are you really a rookie in stock market. If yes, may I suggest you buy a house instead.

It has been said that if you do not know what the chairman of the board had for breakfast this morning you do not know enough about that particular company to make an intelligent decision. Yet mutual funds, which are managed portfolios of stocks, seldom are able to out-perform an UN-managed index, such as the S&P 500. The mutual funds are managed by so-called experts, fund managers, and if they cannot do better than a set of stocks that were not managed at all, then the picture looks mighty bleak. Something like 90% of the small investors who invest in the stock market lose money.

You need to decide first of all what your investment goals are. Is it preservation of capital? Capital gains? Income? What is it you want to accomplish? When you have figured all this out and spent a lot of time in study then maybe you would be in a postion to decide what to do.

For most people, a home purchase is not an investment; it is a place to live. Historically, in most cases, home ownership has been beneficial finanacially. Since you need a place to live anyway, a decent home might be a place to start while you are figuring all the rest of this out.

If you really have inherited a large sum of money be prepared for every friend, relative or acquaintance you ever had to come crawling around looking for a handout. Whatever you do, don't let any of them have any of it. If you do, it will all be gone in a heartbeat.

Real Estate is a no brainer. Stocks are risky. It depends on if you can afford to lose some money or if you want to play it safe.

why not both

My preference will be stocks. But pick a good one that you can sleep well. Check EZM a very well run co with a lot of upside potential, debt free and the best base metal property on earth. You will has less hassel to manage the house.

It depends on how long you plan on living in the area, and where you plan to buy. If you live in an area where real estate is appreciating rapidly (San Fransisco, LA, NYC, etc) then it make sense to buy even if you are going to be there for a year. In other parts of the country you should only buy if you are going to be there for 3+ years. Otherwise the transaction costs of buying and selling the house will eat-up all your gains. If none of the above applies then you should probably buys stocks (specifically 5 types of mutual funds; Aggressive Growth, Growth and Income, International, and a DJIA indexed fund.) as long as you plan to park the money there for at least 3 years. Anything less than that and you should probably park the money in a Money Market account until you decide what you want to do long term. Good Luck.
