greentea-icecream | What stocks would you recommend investing for longer-term? |
I'm considering to invest a bit of my 'dormant' money in US stocks. I'm not planning to trade or make short-term profit from it, instead I plan to just leave it there and hope that in a year or so, the price has gone up reasonably.
I'm holding INTEL stocks which I bought at $17.68 sometimes this year. What do you think about this company's prospect?
Does anyone have a say on which other stocks to choose and why?
I'd appreciate your insights.. serious response only, please... |

If the only stock you currently hold is INTC, you are subjecting yourself to a great deal of risk. Not so much that INTC is necessarily a bad investment, but that all your eggs are in one basket.
Think seriously about a mutual fund for your additional investments. You will get some diversification that way. One of your responders mentioned China Life. That is not a bad idea, but you do not need the risk of plopping you money into just one stock.
One option for you to consider is FXI, and index fund investing in Chinese stocks, including China Life. The fund is up about 27% ytd, better than all other index funds currently traded. However, even that is somewhat more risk than perhaps you should be taking because that is investments all in China.
Another possibility is FEU an index fund of 50 large cap European stocks. If would provide you with somewhat more diversification than the Chinese index, but perhaps not so much chance for appreciation. Up 13.6% ytd.
Another along those same lines is ADRD an index fund of 100 world wide large cap companies. Up 12.6% ytd. |

Did you not hear about Intel today. Massive layoffs. Invest in oil, communications companies, and transportation ie: Fedex, UPS. |

intel is having a hard time competeing with AMD so i would ditch their stock even though i personally like their products.
My 2 recomendations ar china life insurance as the chinese middle class is growing and a growing percentage of the middle class are buying life insurance/ my other favorite is Suncor which the biggest oil extractor in the alberta oil sands in canada.
BTW i own shares in both these companies |

I'd have to go with Coca-Cola, and Colt firearms. The mains reasons are these: Coca-Cola outsells Pepsi, and I read a report that said their stock is expected to jump with the new products they are releasing. As for Colt, they make the guns used by the US Military, and harsh fact that this is, we are at war, and you need guns to fight a war. Just my 2 cents worth. The only other advise I can give is avoid stocks that fluctuate (i.e. Internet companies, web-sites, things of that nature) they are too "here today and gone tomorrow". You should look at companies that have been around for a while, and produce things that people are always going to buy, sell, need or want. On to the Intel question. I actually own a computer store, and I sell more Intel chips then I do AMD chips. So Intel might be a good buy, and they are hardware, computers aren't going away anytime soon. |

I watch a lot of CNBC, and the biggest discussion on that channel is that people are getting out of oil and will be jumping into tech again.
Don't sell all of your intel, but I would definetly lock in some profits and sell some of it.
My investment idol, Jim Cramer from thestreet.com, recommends holding no more than 5 stocks and devoting at least 1 hr a week in each of the 5 stocks.
Some of the companies he is recommending right now are Costco, Pepsi, Boeing, and Yahoo! |

A long term investment that I have is Aqua America WTR. A water utility that has performed well long termed. People will always need water. Also, if you buy directly from the company (DSP), they give you a 5% discount on reinvestment of dividends. |
