What to do with 20,000 USD?
I have been awarded 20,000 and wanted some suggestions on what to do with it. I am clueless about investing and for the past year or so been living pay check to pay check. I have no savings, nor cd's, nor IRA or 401k, nada, help!

Take 5 thousand and pay off/pay down some bills

Take 10 thousand and put it into a savings account

Take 2 grand and open an IRA

Take 2 grand and get a CD

Take 1 grand and go have fun with it - do whatever you want

If you have any credit cards, your best bet is to pay them off to get rid of the interest you are paying. If not, then I would suggest putting it into a savings account at your bank with a high interest return rate.

20k is a great sum of money to have dropped on you. However you'll soon find out it's not too much.

First thing you should do is go to your bank and talk to a financial adviser on how best to spend your money. He'll give you the spectrum on investments from very low risk and low Return On Investment to very high risk with great ROI.

My plans of attack (though not sure which one I would take) would follow like this:
TThe first would be to get yourself out of all debt and start with a clean slate. Though, if you are in debt, your past behaviors will probably return quite quickly and you'll find yourself in debt again very soon.
With the remainder of your money buy yourself something nice and then drop the rest into a time deposit at your bank. If you drop 15k into a time-deposit and let it sit for three years you'll double your money and have a nice chuck of change to either buy a car or put a down payment on a house.
The return on investment is low but your money is safe.

The second plan of action would be the "change your life" route of thought. 20k is enough to do just about anything for a short period of time.
You could start up a small business, on the internet or in a shop. Though you should be passionate about whatever you start.
Travel the world, though you'd have to budget.
Change your career path.
Go back to school.
Put a down payment on a house.
Go to Vegas and have a night you'll never forget.

Any of these would work in my world.

Contact a personal finacial advisor instead of Yahoo Answers for such a strongly needed answer.

I, myself would set it up in a CD account or high interest rate savings account. $20k isn't easy to come by, investing it could be very risky.

Right now it is a buyers market in the Real Estate field. If I was in your shoes I would put down some money on a house or two - rent them out for a profit, and invest the difference. With balance of the $20,000 I would then I'd take a few months off work - go back to school and study to get a better paying job!

open an account with ING until you decide, it will pay you 4% or more so it will grow as you look into your options.

don't take my advice about anything, you could lose your shirt.

Having said that, take a good look at the track record for SSEMX

Find a decent broker, I'm fond of ameritrade, and ask for guidance.
Look at yahoo finance. Find something that appeals to you for whatever reason, and research the heck out it.
Be careful, RESEARCH !!! Good luck

I would put the max for this year in a Roth IRA. If you have any debts with high interest I would pay that off. It is a good idea to keep about two months pay in a savings or money market account for emergencies (shop around for the best interest rates). Look into different investments, depends a lot on your age etc... Lots of good books out there on investing. Congratulations on your newfound cash.

Wow with that kind of money you can have a field day! I would look at investing it in the stock market. With a little bit of homework you can get stocks that will go up around 5% - 10% in a short period of time and when you think about how much money you have that can be anywhere from $1,000 - 2,000 in a week! I am using http://goldenbullstocks.com check them out you will be impressed and always remember to do your own research.

read up on investments in the paper but dont spend all your money there save most of it keep working and when you really need it you will have it to spend or you could buy a home with that money as a down payment. you could always give it to me.read up on all those things you mentioned above but get info on all of them before you make a decision. good luck .dont spend it on family untill you know how to make it more money(double it)

cosmo
You should start an IRA. You can do this at most banks or brokerage firms. Within the IRA, purchase an international index fund.
