Hmm.. If you prefer stocks, and looking for some stocks to invest that could double your money, try buying bank stocks. They are at least half of what they used to be before.
Or try starbucks, knowing that people could not stop drinking it ;) (Note that there is compeition from Macdonalds now)

Bonds would take a long, long, time to double your money.
Stock(s), may or may not double your money. Ya may even lose money. Your young, if this is money that you can do without , put it into a 401(k) or Roth retirement account. It will eventually double and triple and quadriple, so when you retire you'll have money in retirement savings. Then every year (try) to contribute more into the 401(k) or Roth retirement account.
That money can double and triple and quadriple too.

1. Educate yourself. You are just 18 and definitely need to learn more about investing.
2. Meanwhile open a high yield account in a bank in Eastern Europe. You will get a 12% APY with NO RISK. All deposits are insured by the government.

12% return compounded annual is guaranteed. YOU WILL DOUBLE YOUR MONEY IN 6 YEARS.

I have opened such a high yield account 5 years ago. Email me for more info.

$2000 is a nice chunk of change for someone your age. I hate to say it though, your best option is a mutual fund. Bonds are usually low risk (e.g. Treasury bonds) but they pay out less. With the recent FED rate cuts, interest rates are low.

Stocks offer a better potential rate of return, but with the starting capital you have it will be tough to diversify your holdings. Thus increasing your risk of loss. It's tough to diversify because brokerage fees will weigh down your returns. Brokers charge a fee per stock trade, anywhere from $4-$20 a trade.

You won't double your money, at least not anytime soon. But a mutual fund or ETF (exchange traded fund) is the best way to start.

Go to investopedia.com or Yahoo Finance to get some free info on how to invest your money.

You can double your money in stocks. Many stocks stocks double and triple on a regular basis, it's just a matter of finding them before they do and that takes skill. If you're serious about it, you will learn on your own, do a lot of testing to see what works.

The Chosen One
The best online brokerage acct. by far is zecco, but i advise you to do the research yourself to confirm this first! they are the only ones that have free stock trading {with 2500 minumum acct balance, or 4.50 if less than 2500, wich is still the lowest you will find i promise}, it's what i use and am doing quite well.

Foreign exchange. Dollar is a good short at the moment.

Very old saying:

"The only safe way to 'Double your Money' is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket".
-----------------------
You are asking for a 100% return. Most people would be very happy to average 10% per year in stocks over time. That is average, not every year. And not all decades produce that.
