The best investments over the long term are things that never change. There is really only two things I can think of that never change, energy consumption will always go up and real estate will become more and more scarce. Since energy stocks are investments in companies usually that isn't something I would want for long term holdings since companies come and go. Real estate on the other hand.

a diversified index portfolio of stocks

50% us total stock market
25% developed country index
25% emerging market index

with my interpretation of best meaning: low cost, simple to maintain, reasonable risk and potential for higher return than simply investing in the s+p 500, and generating little in taxes

invest in this portfolio review it at the end of each year to rebalance it making sure it is still in the %s above

enjoy the rest of your life and laugh at all of your friends and relatives constantly moving their money in and out of various stocks and funds

of course you should have a good portion in a bond index fund as well probably 20% if you have a 30 year time frame

There are no guarantees in investments. What may look like a solid investment now, may be worthless in 20 years time. Even a strong company may, one day, be taken over, and broken up. Likewise, a small company, may build up over years to be very strong. The best thing is to spread your investments over a variety of companies, and a variety of commodities, so that, overall, you get a good return on your portfolio.

Low cost index funds!!!!!!!

The Total Stock Index Fund from Vanguard is basically a blend of the whole US market. There's also a Total Bond Fund, a Total International Fund, plus they have target funds that have a general retirement date in mind that 'diversifies' for you based on how far away your retirement is...

today's shining corporates with good governance will give normal expected line of returns.

Commodities market will have edge over share market.

New inventions/explorations - business houses connected with SPACE PROGRAM, Ocean exploration (deep sea mining - explorations, etc.,) Earth sciences will be shining better than other business. (not only for stock market but also for education -- If you have kids put them in these basic Science.)

return on real estate - better return based on locality you choose - Strategy is -- you should research on Government future plan - infrastructure development - etc., -- you will have assured best return.

Don't invest on Gold - though it is shining to day.

A home. And by that I mean a place you'll live in, not a speculative investment for resale in 29 years.

Everyone's got to live somewhere, so owning one's principal residence means one less monthly expense (no rent, though there are other expenses with ownership) and knowing one's home is one's own is quite a different feeling from renting. Psychologically an owned home pays nice benefits.
