Sailon | What will you do if the US Government should call in all gold ? |
It's been done before. You might be facing legal troubles if you don't turn in the gold that your holding, only collecting a fraction of it's true worth.
This might happen if the Government feels that the country overall is facing desperate times.
It's been said that 95% of gold above ground is still being held. Additional Details http://www.forties.net/gold.html |

Depending on where it's kept and how traceable it is, people may not have much choice. If it's in a safety deposit box, it would be seized. If it's in an etf, it would be seized. If it's being held under a foreign account, it's likely to be seized. If it's purchase is traceable and it's sale can't be accounted for, then as you state, the person is facing legal trouble. I wouldn't consider this an impossibility, but I sure hope it doesn't get to that point.
I'm not stocking up on gold because I prefer things that are more fluid, but that doesn't mean that I don't worry. Maybe if I were more of a woman of the world, I would convert money to another currency. |

I would say "what gold?" :) Just like i would say if they came by collecting firearms. |

If the US dollar collapses and gold becomes the only acceptable money for international trade. Then indeed the US government and many other governments might confiscate all privately held gold.
But in such circumstances, they would probably make buying and selling gold by private individuals illegal. And you would have to choose between hiding your gold and being hunted down like a drug-dealer. Or giving your gold to the government at the prices they decide to pay.
There won't be any legal market for gold, if the government decides to confiscate gold again. And you would have to become a criminal in order to profit from any gold you might hide from the government. |

What gold?
Seriously, I would get it and probably me out of the country. We should get some warning before that happens.
First they will start to control futures trading, currency trading, and gold trading for US citizens. Then will come outright confiscation. Some smart people see it as likely. Others as unavoidable. |

Heck, they can't even collect the marijuana. What makes you think they would be capable of collecting the gold? |

Hi,
While I agree that this would be a disaster for freedom . . . I'm not a gold bug. It doesn't pay dividends, so I don't have any to give (except what's in my mouth as fillings -- so I hope the government doesn't demand that!).
Put your money in basic needs, and invest in companies that supply those basic needs.

This will not happen. We left these days when Nixon took us off the Gold Standard.
US Treasuries, specifically, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities or "TIPS" - are a safer bet than gold, unless one thinks the US gov is going to declare bankruptcy and default on all of its obligations, then it really doesn't matter after that because we would be at war over all basic and industrial resources. |

I'd probably do the same thing if the sky was falling.
