Honestly I believe the world would be better off without it. The stock market is (by effect) a way for a company to take your money and invest it in their company, in the hopes that the company will use that money to expand and gain more profit.
The company wants the money to run with (and not give it back). The Investor wants their money back (with a return), and assign a value to their shares (though there is no guarantee that value will be payed out).
The entire system is very unstable and just asking to be knocked over in my opinion.
Banks have money in stocks/bonds/commodities. Those stocks/bonds/commodities go under, the bank looses money, the bank calls in loans, people loose their homes, the government supports the people, the government needs international loans, they become overextended, international lenders stop lending or start to call in their loans, the nation is bankrupt, life as we know it ends in the new great depression.
I know it's not exactly like that, but I was trying to illustrate a cause/effect chain. The point is the stock market, and banking systems in general, create their own problems simply because of the way business is done. However the way the world market is interwoven now... if one systems falls, chances are they all will, and everyone will be screwed at the same time.... so everyone will be on equal footing. |

There has to a market to exchange business interests... You can't outlaw it... There will always be a market... Whether it be underground or not. |

it can't possibly happen.
remember that the stock market is where lenders and borrowers get together.
people who have money who are willing to lend and people who are looking to borrow money.
if there wasn't a stock market, the market will come up anyways because business' need capital to fund future growth of their company.
it would be too costly to contact each person individually and ask if they have money to borrow them.
if there was no stock market, business' wouldn't grow as fast as they do now... you wouldn't be enjoying the ease of everyday living now because what we have now is because of the market...
without the market, we would be back in the primitive age |

Well it would be like before there was a stock market. There would be huge day markets where people had to go to and travel to if they wanted to do business. In a lot of third world countries you can still see this type of bazaar activity. But all in all it would be much harder for companies to expand and gain power because people would not be able to put trust into them with their money from afar. |

We would survive but be much worse off. Stock markets perform a number of functions that save society significant sums of money. They provide price information so potential buyers or sellers can get trustworthy information on how much asset prices are going for. They provide a conduit for the creation of new capital, such as farm equipment, to form. They provide notary type services so that people need not trust strangers. They provide regulatory and audit services to make certain everyone, big or little, powerful or powerless, gets to play by the same set of rules. They provide, through their member firms, temporary sources of cash to keep prices stable so no one party can take advantage of another party as liquidity happens to change, they permit small investors and small companies (mom and pops) to be big firms, they permit riches to travel from foolish rich people to savvy poor people and riches to travel from foolish poor people to savvy rich people. They reduce the amount of hunger in the world by smoothing access to capital for farmers by transferring the risk from those least able to manage it, the farmers, to the parties most able to absorb it, the rich.
Stock, bond, commodity and derivative markets exist because they are an improvement over what existed before. They make all better off and no one worse off. In fact, without markets banks, insurance companies and other intermediaries could not exist. If they did not exist, you would live in peonage as the medieval serfs did. |
