very different!!!
we probable wouldnt have as much and
there wouldnt be those people that get wealthy from stocks

Rob
Things would take forever to build, consumers would have to wait long periods to get stuff that they want and need, quality of life would be substantially 'degraded' for the majority of people in all countries, worker pay would be a lot lower. On the positive cost of living would be lower, less polution, more smaller mom and pop stores would be around, a companies performance wouldn't be driven by investor proffits, no warren buffet, no carl ichan.

Much smaller corporations because they get their funds through the stock market investments. Stock market is a place where average citizens can invest in companies like microsoft or mcdonalds. Ofcourse these average citizens make a profit when the company does well. They took the risk and invested. Without the stock market you will have MUCH SMALLER corporations and companies like mcdonalds or microsoft would have never created billionaires like bill gates. And these companies would be owned by few select people. Their income would drop atleast to 1/3rd of what they already make. The companies would expand much more slowly because there isnt a constant flow of money for operations or other departments as when a stock market is available. You need money then and there to start some kind of research and development or create new locations. Without a stock market this money would come out of the founders pockets and at the time they might not have that money. Companies would advance and progress at a snail pace without a stock market.

Technology would be advancing much more slowly because the stock market is basically funding research and creating new factories. The founders and CEOs could just go to wealthy people for investment but thats basically the stock market right there. Why go to one person or a dozen people for investment when you can go to a few thousand people?

Like it was 200 years ago.

we would still be trading comodities like it was done for thousands of years before the stock market.

One way to look at it is that there would be one less form of legalized gambling in the world.

The other way to look at it is that corporations would have a much harder time raising money for expansion and growth. I'm no fan of corporations--I was an elected union officer for twenty-five years, but expansion and growth mean jobs and opportunities for working people who might otherwise be unemployed.

Always Can
It should be great, if you are the ordinary main street folks.

It will not be so great, if you are wall street employees of hedge funds and derivatives, CDS, CDO, company, etc

The whole thing about stock market is actually run by big players with billions of dollars of your money to drive the market towards the north or south direction.

There would be fewer jobs and a lower standard of living. The stock market is really an effective medium for corporations, large and small, to raise capital needed to launch, maintain and grow their businesses. Investors provide this capital by buying stock in hopes of getting dividends and/or being able to sell it at a higher price later. But these investors must accept the risk that the price will decline if the company isn't profitable.

Countries without large stock markets must rely on their governments to raise capital through taxes that are subsequently invested in projects that the government deems best. Individuals are relieved of the burden of deciding how to invest but they still must accept the risk that the government's investments may or may not provide jobs with good wages and goods and services that people would choose for themselves.

Think of Apple and the Trans-Siberian railway. Apple provides sophisticated products that enhance the standard of living for people. If we had to go without our ipods, we'd survive but we'd be less happy. Without a stock market, a company like Apple would not exist. However, if the Trans-Siberian railway had to rely on a stock offering to get its capital, it may not exist at all. The Russian government has elected to maintain this service at great expense and to the considerable benefit to those in that region of Russia. So, without the stock market, we'd lose the richness of variety in our available goods and services and the jobs that go with their production but we'd likely have more public goods that would provide some benefit to everyone.

The world without Stock Markets, will be either fully capitalistic or entirely socialistic.
It would be like 2 extreme ends of economic scenario.

The wealth creation and management, would either be entirely in the hands of private parties if it is a Capitalistic Economy or entirely in the hands of Government.

Sources of finances would be restricted, free flowing economy may be hampered and development may have been impeded.
Transparency in Business and public participation in Corporates may not have been possible without Stock Markets.
