My wife just lost her job. Her severance package is about $40,000. She's looking for another job, but I'm thinking with that amount of cash she should be able flip it, invest it or something and she can work part time or not at all. |

Where do you live? Where I live, $40,000 lasts about 9 months if you don't have a house payment to worry about and don't eat meat more than 2 times a week. You know of course she will have to pay taxes on that. That will leave her and you maybe $25,000 maybe less. |

I would be a bit wary about not having a job, $40k doesn't stretch as much as it used to! Would it be possible to meet with a financial adviser or similar to see if an income-generating investment is possible? (If you're in Australia I recommend http://www.macquarieprivatewealth.com.au/products_services/overviewServices.aspx?id=72 ).
From a ballpark sort of figure I think you can start planning what you want to do. |

I also had a similair problem as you have.

The answer depends on your financial situation. If the money is not going to be needed for years, put it into an indexed balanced mutual fund at Vanguard. If the money might be needed, put it into the Prime Money Market Fund at Vanguard. |
