djshaugh | Whats going to happen to the Solar Industry? |
While solar power seems perfect for energy use, the bottom line is that it is not cost efficient. How can an investor be ready to make the most of this (possibly) emerging industry? |

There has been a black out on the high flying solar stocks.
Lower oil prices will not make solar more desirable. Solar is very expensive.
Few people have money to spend on solar and who has equity in their home to spend $20-50,000 on solar panels?
And what bank is going to make that loan?
Just look at the plunge in solar stocks.
FSLR, LDK, TSL, JASO, CSIQ, SOLF, STP.
Obama can be excited about being green all he wants. Who is going to pay for it? The gov is trying to keep the banks in business. I can assure you that they won't be bailing out the solar companies. |

I think is going to be the next bubble |

I jut read one company has come out with a new coating for solar panels that will increase the efficiency a lot - that could help bring down the prices a bit. The industry is just starting to take off - probably a few more years until it gets closer to being worthwhile using, depending on where you are in the country - I live in Penna, so we don;t have the same sunlight as southwest, etc |

It will thrive as long as there are subsidies
from many governements.
Many competitors will go into that business.
It will end in a bloodbath when those subsidies
disappear, as those governments will see that
the solar craze cost them too much without
real "green" benefit, and some harm created.
After spoiling the landscape, of course.
The usual cycle! The usual gamble!
At best, a matter of timing and selectivity for
those who dare to invest in that industry, or
better said, that fad.

Well I think that this industry will be good because everyone wants to move a way from oil. How long it will take who knows. But Obama wants money to go to "green industries" to help them grow. But we are in such a financial mess that some things maybe put on the back burner, but i would cautiously invest. |

In the next year, I think there will a shakeout that would not have happened if there wasn't the present economic crisis. As it is, I have faith in the long-term (several years) success of the larger players.
There must be *some* solar panels, though. Even unsubsidized, they make sense in some situations - just look at the solar-powered emergency phones and traffic signs. And the US begins its no-cap 30% tax credit for residential installations next year.
The difference betwen the photovoltaic industry and the fuel cell fad a few years ago is that a consumer has been able to buy viable solar panels for years, maybe not at a great price, but low enough so that they are sold to consumers. I remember PC's being the same way in the early 80's.
Disclosure: I am long STP. |

They will keep working on more efficient and user friendly products.
There's room for bubble making and speculation in the sector.
Already novel products are being worked on such as solar cells that will be printable via home computer printer.
Once some company develops a truly efficient method, it is likely to fan out into new types of building products/materials that will use their method. As the method will be patented and popular, a lot of competition will likely fall into the pits of penny stocks until someone thinks of the next great thing.
Investors had best not get caught in the shady underworld of penny stocks unless the company is well researched. Basically it's best for them to keep reading news on the developments and to keep an eye out for who is ready to market a great new breakthrough. Also, it will be good to look for companies whose products are well marketed today, but as I mention, once the latest and greatest arrives, those stocks could fall into the wayside. |
