That's it! 24ct gold is as pure your going to get, PS if you are thinking of using it for jewellery it is very soft and wares quite fast

In a way it doen't matter; as long as you are only paying for the gold content, or you can sell for the intrinsic value plus the extra you may pay. For example a very old sovereign might attract a higher price than the gold because of the coins rarity value. Hopefully this "extra" value could still be recouped (maybe more) if and when you sell it. What you have to avoid is those commemorative medals that are sold way beyond the gold content value which you will never recoup. Have alook at http://www.shareworld.co.uk/articles/gold.htm

The first answer is correct.

24-carat gold is as pure as you'll get and is used for jewellery mainly in Arabic countries, and China, Hong Kong...

22-carat gold (also 21-carat) is used for jewellery mainly in Arabic countries and India and Sri Lanka

Most European and Mediterranean countries use 18 carat gold.

North America usually 14 carat for better quality jewellery. Also, 10 and 18 carat is used.

The only problem with the higher carat (over 18) gold jewellery is that the gold is too "soft", too pure, and so it wears away faster than lower carat gold.

p.s. For "filigree", which is common in India, Sri Lanka use the higher carat gold (usually 20-22) and also some southern European regions (Sardinia in particular), usually 18 carat.

As someone has stated, the higher the carat, the higher the price.

Here is a handy link explaining in more detail the differences.
