August 2007 started the credit crunch

It can be traced back to 1913 with the creation of the Federal Reserve. It was compounded by the US going off the gold standard in 1971. The US went from the worlds largest creditor nation to the worlds largest debtor nation through the 1990's and through this decade. There have been many bubbles along the way but the housing bubble was the straw that broke the camels back. This bubble starting bursting in July 2007 and was in full swing in March 2008. This is going to last a very long time. This is not just a financial crisis. This whole economey has been based on confidence and debt....And confidence in the debt. This country is going to have unlearn what they have learned the last 37 years. Once you learn that this prosparity has been based on a lie then you can trace it to the beginning when the lie started. December 23, 1913 is the answer.

when congress pass the bill which promised everyone can own a home, you can look it up, it was the economic housing neighborhood building act or some such nonsense.

since the market came up with that it's sound to lend money to people who couldn't really afford it.

Robert is correct but Bill Clinton signed it into law. That was the beginning since all you had to have to buy a home was a pulse and a wish. That made the banks have to do creative financing and Wall Street ate it up like it was candy till it started giving them diarrhea. Now the whole U.S. economy is sick so we must get well again. Oh yes the fact that we are spending billions on a war didn't help either. then spending billions to bail out private sectors in the U.S. will not help either. Thank you Mr. Clinton and Mr. Bush and all the go along people we elected on the hill in Washington. We have now returned to earth.
