awesomeness | When do i know to sell high? |
this is hypothetical...
say i buy a small cap etf at a low price of $15. then say the market is going up and my eft rises a lot, when do i sell? |
|

You would sell that some point when its worth more than $15. |

It varies with every investment of course.
The simple and basic answer it that you need to have a reason to buy the small cap etf in the first place. You need to have a reason to believe it will go up.
Then when that reason no longer holds true, you sell.
Traders say you should have a price target to sell before you buy. When you hit that target you reassess it. Or if something changes.
IMO, and for my investing, it is about assessing risk vs reward. Chances it will go up over chances it will go down. The more a stock goes up the more likely it can go down so the risk increases. There are many factors in the that. The company itself, the sector, the overall market, and so on.
Sometimes after it goes up you might see more opportunity, one with less risk in it is more likely to go up than what you own. And so by selling you are doing it for a better investment instead of any reason that the investment you have is too risky.
I think a sell strategy is more important than a buying strategy. It is more important not to lose money than maximize the money you make. |

I would sell whenever you can make a reasonable profit. |

there is no right or wrong answer because you simply dont know. You sell when you feel it is right. Some people hold it till the first moment of it dropping, or they just sell it when they feel it will start dropping soon. |

When you think it'll go down soon or you forsee bad news in the company's future. Maybe a competitor is coming to market with a better product or the company has a long labor strike. Maybe, like GM/Ford, customers don't have money to buy your product anymore.
It's always a hunch. Sometimes you're right, sometimes you're wrong. Educate yourself (read as much as you can--most stuff is online & free these days) and be prepared to be wrong. Just learn from your mistakes. |

There is no magic sign or anything that will tell you with 100% certainty when to sell. If there was, then everyone would be rich.
If you don't have the time or knowledge to follow the markets and watch for trends and business cycles and such, many people just use the 10% rule. If the stock/fund goes down by 10% over a period of time and doesn't appear that it's going to go up again for a while, then you sell. All depends on how volitile the fund is though...some funds can lose 10% one week then make 25% the next then be down 50% the next. |
