When is the best time to buy and sell a stock that is splitting?

many studies have been done on this subject. here is just one of them www.cob.ohio-state.edu/fin/journal/dice/...

forward splits can have the effect of bringing in more investors by a lowered entry price. many investors don't realize that it does not effect the overall value of the stock or the company. the real tough part is knowing if the stock has run up prior to the split because of leaked information or if it will move afterwards.

my personal observation has always been that a stock tends to move prior to the split, then settles down afterwards. very unscientific on my part.

It doesn't matter. Buy before or after, the net is the same.

I talked to somebody last year that ran into the problem of needing to contact people after the split. She had shares from the company, but it was a physical exchange of shares. That's rarely done in the electronic age, but it sure is a hassle. You should look at it the day after the split.

Air Hockey Canada
A stock should be bought on its merits, and a split itself really doesn't make any difference to the equation. The value of your holdings pre and post split is the same.

Why does a company split then? Well, perception is one reason. It may be perceived a split is a sign that the company is doing quite well (again, look at the fundamentals). However, another reason may be for increased liquidity. By splitting they increase shares outstanding and the price is reduced as well.

One type of split you might want to be more wary of is the reverse stock split. For example, a 1-for-10 split means a $1.00 a share stock with 10,000,000 shares outstanding would trade post-split at $10.00 a share with 1,000,000 shares outstanding. This may be done to prop up the company's stock price again for perception OR to meet minimum share price rules in order to continue to be listed on an exchange. It may be a window to some bad fundamentals (not always the case though).

buy before
because after they split you have both
sell after because then you know if you want to keep one

Best to buy pre-split !

signs when to buy - when its still a fast growing stock(BUY RECOMMENDATIONS BY MOST INVESTMENT MGRS) and when the shares are too rich to purchase on a per share basis.

Logic for a split - To stimulate increased stock purchase and interest by making the share lower and more affordable to more people.
Otherwise the shares are too expensive and less people would buy in.

best to do some research before buying or selling. try to sell when you know its at a high and best to by when you know and have done your math where it necessary.

Be cautious not to incur a wash sale with any buying and selling of the same or very similar type holding if you have a loss.
