Well if you have any debt, like credit cards, that charge you 5% interest or more, you'd be well advised to pay it off - that would save you at least 5% a year.
If not, good for you, I'd keep some cash on hand (like in a high interest bank account or CD). Nothing makes you sleep quite so well as money in the bank.
But if you already have a cash reserve then I'd look at index funds or etfs. Particularily ones dealing with technology, like VGT, or ones that deal with international companies, like VWO. The US economy is strong but the greatest potential for growth is overseas. Tech companies are good, too, because many of them are flush with cash and will be able to survive any setbacks that may be in store for the domestic economy in the years to come. |

mutual fund, or stock market.
the last place you want your money to be in current market situation is actually the bank.
there is gonna be another rate cut, thus, bank interest rate is going even lower.
I am planning to keep the money I need in the bank. The money I don't have to touch right now they are going to the stock market.
I'd pick some good long term stocks right now and prepare for the rate cut.
unless you can lock on CD interest rate right now and let it sit for 6 months or more |

Well $5000 isn't much to start with and will take a long time to grow if you put it in conservative stocks or mutual funds.
But if your a savy trader you can make it grow quickly by trading the current upward momentum stocks.
In the last upward momentum in October I was able to turn one of my accounts that had only $2000 at the beginning of Oct. to $50k in just 2 1/2 weeks of trading. But you gotta be watching at all times. Its hard and nerve wracking work but it pays off in a big way. Don't do this in a down market because you will get crushed on every uptick.
I will give you some stocks that just stopped their steep losing streak and are down well over 50% from their 52wk highs and are in an upward momentum right now.. SCA, JRJC, ABK |

Get an emergency fund together in the bank FIRST. 2 weeks to 6 months expenses is a good guildline.
Then pay off debt. If you have credit cards, high interest car loans, etc., pay those off.
Then invest. It is best to diversify your investments through different stocks, mutual funds, bonds, etc. |

I agree with this poster:
ING Direct Orange CD
I just opened a 6month CD at 4.70% yesterday.
You could put it in the CD until you figured out what else you wanted to do with it. |
