If you have less than $5,000, then stocks aren't worth it. The brokerage fees will eat up any gains you make. |

The list of stocks that Jack listed I wouldn't touch if I was just getting into investing all of those companies are losing money and are very high risk. I agree to read a couple of good books and get ahold of the basics and then go on a site like investopedia.com and do some trading in a virtual account where you don't have to put up any money and you can test some strategies and theories you may have learned about one book that I really like is "How to Make Money in Stocks" by William Oneil, he has some great tips on how to find stocks and a trading system that if followed is bang on.
But remember Patience is the key don't trade unless you are sure and also remeber that cash is a position, and you don't have to have your money in something always when the market is up and down as much as it is these days. A couple of stocks that I would recommend to track would be POT and DBA. POT has had quarterly earnings increases for 4 years straight and they are the largest Potash mining company in the world. DBA is an ETF that tracks Agriculture and if you listen to Mad Monies Jim Cramer that is the bull market of the next couple of years. |

Before you risk real money, make some hypathetical trades and see how you do. You will save a big chunk of money. Read Jim Cramer "Real Money" book for a start, he is a little nuts but knows the market and its good for beginners. The best person to take advice from is yourself because no one knows what you need better than you.
Good luck.
Some good stocks to start with FMT, EGLF, SIRI, AMD and DISK. They can get you an easy quick profit but they have some risk to them. |

Listen to Jack P and you'll be heading for disaster.
Reading some good books is the best way to start.
Start with some from the "dummy" series.
If you're interested in trading (vs. investing) I can suggest some additional books.
Don't take stock tips (from anyone). Don't open a broker account until you've read at least two good books. Understand "asset allocation", "position sizing" & "money management" before you invest one cent.
Good luck |

Check with your bank, they can set you up with an investing account and you can trade online if you wish... Or an investment broker... I have an account with my bank and trade online, costs about 28.95/trade.. alot less if one trades alot... but you have to do alot of trading to get down to 6 dollars or so a trade. Good investments right now for the future are green energy or alternative energy sources... check them out on the NYSE or the TSX....GRGR is one investment, look them up on google and TMG.V on the TSX is another.. wind power is getting stronger, SBX on TSX is one..... |

People spend lifetimes trying to "master" stocks. Start with learning the basics of investing. "Investing For Dummies" is an excellent starter book. |
