Where can I invest $5k that's relatively safe but has a decent yield?
I hav roughly $5k-$7k that I'd like to invest. I'm fairly young. It's sitting in a savings account at the moment, but only collecting 3.4% interest. I'd like to get some more out of it, but, given the state of the market, don't know where to look. What's my best bet?

Consider the Vanguard Prime Money Market Fund with a current compound yield of ~4.45% APR.

If you are in a high tax bracket you may prefer their tax exempt money market funds:

Sometimes other institutions will have a higher teaser rate, but Vanguard tends to have the highest yields I've found over the long run. (Vanguard money markets are not FDIC insured, however.)

Article on teaser rates:

Bankrate.com provides links to CD's with high interest rates as well as high interest rate banks.

ING and HSBC often have rates close to Vanguard, and most of their products are FDIC insured. You can check these at the following links:

(If you are investing for a long period of time and are willing to accept some volatility, you should consider putting some money into no-load low-expense mutual funds. These are not guaranteed, but over the long run produce much higher returns.)

American Market Index Mutual Fund...watch this one skyrocket soon as we get a new president! It should get between 7-13% gain per year and already has about a 9% yearly gain on average despite the Bush-conomy (Bush economy). :-)

Your first option should be to fund fully a retirement account. If you do this, and you have extra cash, then one of the best things you can do is open a DRIP Plan.

Go to : low-cost-stock-recommendations

.com

Click on the "DRIP's" Button on the Navigation Bar

These powerful investment plans are seldom talked about because brokers make very little money when they suggest them. Yet, they have proven to be one of the best, if not the best, long-term strategy on Wall Street.

They are perfect for small investors, as well as big investors. They are safe and allow you to not care about whether the market is going up or down. They are a must for any serious investor.

If you decide you are interested in DRIP Plans, click on the advertisement on the same page "$4 to purchase stocks". This will answer your next question, which is, How do I get started? and what is the least expensive way to get started?

I strongly recommend looking into it. They are great plans.

Good Luck

Hey Steve, I may have an option for you that will generate much more than you could ever hope from a savings account.

This is a matter of being in the right place at the right time. My partners and I are looking for another 2 investors to get involved in our start-up company. We expect to hit 6 figures within our first year alone, and we are offering a percentage of profits every month for 5 years.

Get back to me if you're serious about your question, and would like to be one of those 2 people.

3.4% is good on a savings account. Do some research into stocks and other vehicles and when you are ready you can move it into that. meanwhile, 3.4% is good. Keep your money where you can lay hands on it. You could buy a CD and get a better rate if you are going to hold for a longer period, but if you want it for something, right now you have it where you can lay hands on it and take advantage of a buying opportunity at the drop of a hat, or a pin. Cash is King, as Cramer says!
