Contact the "Investor Relations" department of your company.

If your company has a web-site there should be a link to "Investor Relations".

If it is a quoted (public) company, ask a stock broker.

If it is not a quoted co., write to the people at the last known address, or better still, if you can, visit the place and ask them for a lead.

If all else fails, contact the Companies' House. They will have old records.
Do not despair, you will find them.

Find the Transfer Agent for the company. It was probably gained as a "Street" transcation - there may be no certificate, just line item transactions.
Possibly, the stock could also be held by a brokerage firm that is performing administrative duties.

Something that you don't mention is whether the company your worked for was a public company or a private company?

If it was private - I am afraid that you don't have anything sellable because there would be no market for that stock. If it was public - like suggested below: call the company and ask to speak to someone in investors relations or accounting.

This is very simple. You know the total amount of money that you invested in. You also know what you had purchased the stocks at. Divide those 2 and you should get your answer.
In order for you to get a specific answer, your broker should mail to you everyfew months a report, and it should give you specific details on how your stocks are performing, and in that report, it should tell you the number of stocks that you own.
