Off the back of a lorry. Poundland and poundstretcher have their own lorries. They buy in bulk and it usually comes from the oriental countries. I bought a Union Flag "Made in China" |

Good question as they sell anti-histamines and zovirax amongst other things at £l--d for £1.
They also sell a lot of other - not tatty and not nasty things.
One thing, though you pay one penny more for some of the goods that are 99pence elsewhere, so this may help them a bit. They don't take credit or debit cards either, which saves them the fee. Cash or cheque (over £5) only.
Bought two bags of in date Fox's dark glacier sweets for £1 the other day - wonderful.
People describing it as tat can't possibly have been to one. Saves me hundreds of pounds on craft, camping, pet and computer items.
Some of the stuff is imported from China some is made in the UK some India. Household cleaning stuff is ace. Branded products abound. |

A lot of the stock that is available in pound shops are made up of a number of different elements in that they are first runs from companies, often seconds, diluted products or they are in sizes different to the standard size you find in the regular shops. As someone else has pointed out a lot of the products are imported from the far east - due to the huge amounts of stock they buy they get them for a very good price. Also you sometimes see first runs of products in shops like these or industrial copies of existing products. |

They go and buy it in a Juanshop and bring it back to England and sell it for a pound. Juanland to poundland.... |

The stuff is generally imported by the containerload and then sold either directly to the shops via a buyer or through a wholesaler. If you ever walk around a wholesaler, you'll generally find that the £1 items in the £1 shops are actually only worth about 30-60p, so sell 10 items and you've made at least £4. Some national retaillers buy their stuff in huge quantities, store it in a warehouse then ship it out to their network of stores - the more they buy, the cheaper it is.
Its really attractive as a business as the end retail price is usually really a lot more than the product is actually worth. |

econimy's of scale, the more you buy the less you pay. and a pound can still be quite a bit for a product. |

They get it from third world countries like Taiwan/India. And it is cheap because it is nasty. |
