Where to get reliable investment advice?
My parents are retired and live in Montreal. They recently sold a property and are wondering how to invest the proceeds - they are not very financially savvy. Their bank advisors are recommending all kinds of structured products and portfolio services that carry high fees. Where would you recommend they go to get good, objective advice on how to invest for retirement?

Find a Financal Advisor that works on a Fee for Service basis. They charge a flat hourly rate but you do not purchase the securities from him/her.

Alternatively, ask your friends/family for a referral to an Advisor they use and trust.

they need to find an independent investment councilor... do NOT use one that is going to do the investments themselves as they are wed to where they want you to invest ... this will cost you more in the beginning.. but be a more reliable source of advice.

read " The Intelligent Investor"
the best book on the subject

I suggest you check out several financial advisers. Do not use those who are employed by banks, insurance companies, or mutual funds - they will ALWAYS push their own products, which invariably carry high fees ( after all, they get paid through these ).

Choose, if possible, a fee-for-advice professional who is not motivated by commission, and can advise your parents impartially.

Bank advisers are OK, but they only recommend their own products. Consult also an "independent financial advisor" and compare their advice.

Cliff
you already did it - a financial adviser. You don't have to do the investment through them but get their advice. I'd talk to at least two and see if they tell you the same thing... then you can open an online brokerage account and do just what they suggested yourself. Even if they charge a small fee to advise you I think it's worth it to not make a mistake on your own.

www.forex-profit.info might be a good place - with countless of the best youtube videos about investing

Do NOT use a 'financial advisor'. 95% of them are brokers...product salesmen that are under pressure to sell products that will make them (and their firm) a lot of money.

I suggest that they DIY. It's not hard.

Here's a great book:

And, if they have questions, they can go here:

The discussion forum members are knowledgable, helpful and very nice.

Good for you for realizing that there are high fees. Many people think they pay no fees at all and the fees destroy their retirement.

I found this site gave some good info for beginning to invest:

Personally I find the stock market more interesting but you are probably better off following this strategy of safer stuff.
