I would like to buy some gold and silver coins to use as barter in the case of economic collapse. The better question is WHY???????
The least expensive way to buy Gold & Silver is through their respective ETF's: GLD & SLV
Safe & cheap.. No storage or delivery cost. No big "spread" or hidden fees.
SLV & GLD are among the highest holders of these precious metals..... in the world.
I buy and sell these ETF's fairly regularly. I never have more than 3% of my total portfolio in the precious metals (that's total... not each). I don't want to have to explain to my wife.... how I lost 10-20% of our savings in a few days. |

There are many dealers that sell gold/silver coins. However, they all offer very different prices and often try to sell you pieces that aren't really the best to buy.
I would suggest asking a third party source, such as coolcashcoins, to help you purchase your gold. They will help you find the best coins at the best prices, and don't sell coins to the general public (or you).

You instinctively already know that holding a paper ETF is not the same as holding physical gold. Until the Flash Crash a couple of weeks ago, nobody realized that ETF's could freeze up and lock you out of trading or redeeming the underlying. If one of the reasons you're buying gold is to protect against a crash in the system, then that very reason may be why you're left holding the bag (paper ETF instead of physical gold) in the event of a crash.
