Doing the Right Thing
Mutual funds because they have a historical rate of return of 10-14% in the past 25 years.

Real estate have a historical rate of return between 6-8%.

Bonds are the safest investments of all three, so they have a historical rate of return between 3-6%.

depends on the companies you invest in. here's a listing of risk level, from greatest to least:

stocks
mutual funds
bonds

real estate doesn't really fit in that list...i guess it would probably be the most risky because so much depends on the location of the property, the improvements thereon, and the market for the property.

stocks are very volatile. mutual funds are safer...just pick a good fund, invest, and watch your money work for you. bonds are incredibly safe, backed by government securities, and have a guaranteed rate of return. with the two most popular types of bonds, they mature in about seven years and earn interest for up to 30 years.

Someone who says real estate is not looking at the big picture. Let's say you buy a house for 100K (just for simplicity's sake). There is a commission that has to be paid to the Agent of 5-6%. The seller is the one who actualy pays it, but it is built into the home's price. When you sell it you'll end up paying that 5-6% on the back end. Meanwhile, while you own it, if you don;t live there you have to manage the property, or pay someone to manage it. In addition, don't forget about the 1-2% per year property taxes you'll be paying.... The investment is also not as liquid as the stock market, meaning you can't just sell it wqhenever you want...

Yeah R/E can be the best investment, but it is a heck of a lot of work even if you just flip it. Are you prepared for all the physical work and time it takes? That's why investing in the market is the best and easiest way to make money, granted, you have to do your research or due diligence and then throw your dice in. I made 125% in about a yr and 1/2 in the market. You just have to be educated, not to mention, there are TONS of really great stock picking services out there. Motley fool has a bunch of awesome ones. Anyway I barely lifted a finger to make that money vs. if I had purchased r/e. That's how I llike to rollll.......

I agree with Pretzel22. While real estate can be a good investment, you have to look at all the costs involved. If you buy a 100k house, you have to pay commission fees, property taxes, house insurance, and any costs to improve or maintain it. Like in my area, for a $180,000 house, I pay $3100 a year property taxes and $1500 a year insurance.

Its very hard to lose money in Real Estate, especially now since its a buyers market. With so many great deals on property out there pick one put some money into it hang on to it for 2 years to avoid 15% capital gains tax and sell. Easily net large amounts 10-40K without much effort.
Bonds are a safe investment but you need to invest very large amounts and keep it invested for several years (5-20) before significant return will be made.
To factor in the real Estate agents commission is obserd, every investment you pay commision, stock brokers are no different. Also a Real estate investment isnt as liquid as stocks but you can always borrow against it if need be.
