14kt gold is 58.33% pure, while 10kt gold is 41.67% pure gold, so if the price is based solely on the percent of pure gold, 14kt gold should be 40% more expensive.

14 karat is more pure gold, if you rate it on that. 24 karat is pure gold.

the higher carat number has a higher percentage of pure gold, so 14K is more expensive than 10k gold

14k gold should be more expensive, due to the higher gold content (and therefore less alloy).
They mix gold with other metals (nickel, zinc, etc.) to make the gold harder, less brittle. Pure gold is soft, you can mark it with your fingernail (remember the old west, where they bit the gold to make sure it was real?)
Sometimes, 24k gold is cheaper than 14k or 10k, because the lesser amount of gold is offset by the greater expense in preparing the mixture of gold and other metals. But with gold prices high now, I doubt that's the case. (Although it was the case 20 years ago when I worked in a jewelry store!)
