investment in share market (buying shares) - private banks like HDFC, ICICI, Kodak, etc., - in public sector (safe) is State Bank of India.

for putting fixed deposit - STATE BANK OF INDIA. Postal Saving - no one is in near comparison.

Focus
ICICI Bank - This has got a lot of potential locked in it - Insurance, Demat Services, Securities and so on.

http://www.ratekhoj.com gives you a lot of information about fixed deposit and loan rates in various banks in India. You can try looking at it before you decide.

Icici Bank ... stock symbol IBN. One of the largest banks, but don't put much in banks anywhere. They are all going to be struggling with a credit shortage ... less money they can borrow to then lend out and make a profit.

You would be better off finding a good mutual fund with international exposure, or an ETF that held stocks in India. Or, stocks in the BRIC, which is Brazil, Russia, India, and China. That should not represent more than 20% of your total investments.
