There are at least two different schools of thought on this problem. One is that the best sectors are the most defensive sectors such as consumer staples and medical. These being sectors which are perhaps least impacted by a recession. When the market dropped 800 points one of the only stocks to increase in price that day was Campbell Soup.
Another school of thought is that there are many companies that although they are sound companies with excellent prospects have seen their valuations shrink dramatically during the past year to the point where they seem to be selling at what amounts to give away prices. These are not in any one particular sector but sort of distributed throughout the stock universe. The thought is that these represent extremely good values today. I believe Warren Buffet mentioned just that on Friday.
Included in the first group would be PG, CPB, KFT, NSRGY, BDX, SYK.
Included in the 2nd group would be GOOG, MMM, XOM, CVX
There is also a 3rd and 4th school of thought that some small cap more speculative companies might offer very good values based on their potential prospects. And some foreign developing market companies might also especially those of India and China where valuations have plummeted. |

I am afraid that times are not the same now.
The markets of these days aren sector specific. For any investor,it is very important to select the script based on the company fundamentals.Sector specific buyin helps in a bull run scenario, wherein you can see lot of buying in a particular sector.
In bearish markets,it is very important to look at individual scripts and invest cautiously.
But yes, banking and finance is the sector you should be keeping away for sometime.
Never know, which bank goes bankrupt:-) |

It is the Share Market/ Equity Market that is Volatile. The others are only reacting in panic.
Any Commodity Sector is safe. Gold is a Good Investment Option. Oil Sector is Good.
If u are choosing in the Equity Market, then Infrastructure, Telecomm are good. Shipping Indices are Down, so hold on for sometime before investing in Shipping. |
