| Which is wiser, investing in the stock market or investing in real estate? |

Unless you have a sizable chunk of money (I would suggest minimum $100K) to invest, then to me the stock market is clearly your better choice.
Even if you do have that amount or more, there are still advantages the stock market has over real estate. For example, transaction costs are lower (you can trade stocks online for less than $10/trade, whereas real estate you'll owe a commission likely 5% or more on total value when you sell). There are other costs involved in buying/selling real estate as well, including annual taxes (whether your property gains in value or not), inspections/appraisals and other closing costs, and sometimes annual homeowners dues and/or upkeep fees.
Not only is buying and selling stocks cheaper from a transaction costs perspective, but entry and exit into or out of a stock position is so much easier and less time-consuming. There are many good free sites for stock research, and the time required to actually execute the trade once you've made your decision is just seconds via an online broker. In real estate there is (or should be) alot of research into whether the property you're considering is a good investment - and then once you've made your decision, there is still a broker (usually), lawyer, and often financing agent involed not to mention alot of paper work that takes days or weeks to get through.
As I alluded to earlier, another advantage to stocks is low investment minimums (whether via mutual fund company or online brokerage) compared to real estate - could be as low as $500 or less.
The follow-on advantage to this is you can diversify much more easily because of the lower investment minimums.
The good news here is you can have your cake and eat it too! You can invest in real estate via the stock market. There are real estate mutual funds, and there are real estate stocks too including REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts), homebuilders, and other companys which own land and/or buildings. |

In my opinion, the stock market. Over long periods of time, stocks have historically provided the highest returns of any asset class. Sure, it's possible to make lots of money in real estate, but I think it's a lot harder, takes a lot more time, and historically on average provides lower returns than the stock market.
Of course, you can lose a lot of money in the stock market if you don't invest wisely. Putting all your money in one or two or even five stocks is risky, even if the companies seem solid (remember Enron, Tyco, HealthSouth, WorldCom?) I think a wise investment is either a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that mirrors a major market index like the S&P 500, Mid-Cap 400 or Russell 2000. By doing that, you're investing in a whole group of companies with one investment, which protects you against one or even a few of them going bad. |

Wiser? I don't know that one is "wiser" than the other.
Both are places where a lot of money has been made.
Ideally, you would have both stock market AND real estate investments. |

Your best choice is to balance, but not just between these two. Also have money in liquid cash and bonds as well to cushion your investments over time. Remember, investments should be long term strategies (well unless your about to retire) so investing in either stock market or real estate is not bad at all. Remember in 20 years, big drops or increases will not matter today. Just balance and do your homework into what stocks or real estate you maybe interested in. |

For the last five years the stock market has done better than the real estate market - now, with the real estate market getting ready to take a nose-dive because of the mortgage industry problems...I would stick with stocks - or private money mortgage investing....it's safe and if the borrower screws up you get a piece of property...just my opinion |

If you have lots of money to give and want a 100% return then I'd say Real Estate. You dont' have to buy real estate to invest in it. Many people get confused. There are many ways to invest. Best way would have to be an actual private investor. The houseing market is down and subprime loans are gone. These people still need to buy a house what do they do where do they go. They come to you and ask you to finance them. On average you can make a 18-24%/yr return on whatever you loaned to them. Now the reason this would be better than the stock market is because nothing is sketchy as everything is written in contract and signed away. It's a sure deal. |

depends on what and where you choose. In some markets the housing sector is in serious trouble and should be advoided. Likewise some stocks I would not touch with Usama's money. The smartest move is to diversify that way you can potetionally cut your losses |

How about a little of both. Right now, the stock market may look a little better. Real Estate is dull in many places, and could get even more worse.
Try to find some companies you feel are good investments, and follow their stock. Buy a few shares, and watch what it does. Some companies are in a good business now and that means their stock should do well. |

Buy Real-estate exchange trade funds. The long-term return has been better than realty itself. Moreover, you have instant liquidity (sell in a minute) and no tennants to deal with.
Take a look at,

both!
if you don't already own the place you live then real estate.
if you do own the place you live then stocks.
Or if it's a whole lot of money then both again. |
