Which kind of assets have lowest rate of return?

normally the most secure. T-bills and government bills and bonds. The more secure the investment the less should be the return demanded by the investor. It does not always work that way because many times investors are not rational.

Those assets with the most guarantees (FDIC, etc.).

You've got to "trade" gold to make any money. It's not been a good "buy and hold" type of an investment.

I think it goes for about $570 an ounce today. Gold was worth over $600 an ounce in 1980.

In 1990 it was fetching about $400 an ounce. In 2000 it was at $300 an ounce (buying in 2000 and selling today would have been great...but buying in 1980, 1990 and selling today would not have been a great return).

Gold only 2-3%?? I don't think so. My gold ETF (GLD) was well over 20% profit until recently (sold it at around 10% profit). The local saving bank is a pitiful 1% or less apr on saving accounts (online has much higher apr averaging 4.5-5.25%). Therefore the answer is cash.

But then again cash is the least voliatle in the group as well.

People.

Without a question it would be GOLD that only returns on average 2%-3% of return. Not much better than a bank "savings" account.

The best I think is either real estate or growth stock mutual funds.

Rate of return varies over the time period. For example: if a stock does not rise in value for 3 years and in the 4th year it doubles in value, the rate of return is 25 percent over 4 years, but it was 0 percent in the previous 3 years.

If you're referring to simply fixed income instruments (cds or bonds) I would have to say that a checking account is the lowest, followed by a savings account, then CD.

If you are referring to asset classes...then all of the forementioned are considered cash assets...so cash is the lowest rate of return asset. Cash = no risk = no return

Cash! It gets less (because of inflation) if you hang on to it. Yourself if you are idle, lazy and sleep too much (just kidding).
