Depends on the location. Location can break or make any business.
"Retail Store" can mean anything, including a coffee shop. |

I think the coffee shop leaves more room for growth, you can start small and add different services and options, have fewer employees, etc. If you set up in the right area, you will be busy at least 18 hours a day. You can cater to breakfast, coffee break, lunch, and "on the way home" crowds, etc. I think a retail store is much more limiting and not nearly as certain to do well. |

I have owned a retail store/boutique for over 30 years, and spent several years working in restaurants and then consulting for restaurants and bars and selling supplies to them.
The typical food service establishment works on a TEN PERCENT profit margin....after all expenses and overhead!
A RETAIL store, can have a margin of 50% or even more than that for a high volume location.
You do have to have MORE money tied up in inventory for a retail store, but usually you have a markup of double or triple your cost and minimal expense for fixtures. A restaurant, because food is disposable, will have little tied up in food inventory but a huge amount of money tied up in fixtures, tables, chairs, kitchen equipment, coolers, and a lot more staff and crew expenses. |

i think opening a restaurant/coffee shop would be quite fustrating at first but in the long run it would be more profitable
retailing is an expensive business and robbery could well be a problem
you might consider(if you were) an upmarket coffee place that is also a restaurant during the early evening, im sstudying business at gcse btw, just for re-assurance |

coffee has huge profit margins, but more restaurants fail, they are harder to make work. choose which you like best and go for it.

i would say it would depend on the location is there any competition for that kind of bussiness or will you be the only one ie if a resturant will it be unique to others what kinda of retail store ? is there others around that can bet your prices take this into consideration |

depending on location, id say clothing, if you have a steady amount of people entering your store in both circumstances, retail can mark clothing up to 50%+ and higher, where as food and so on is only a small markup. |
