I use Kitco. www.kitco.com. I started 3 years ago and have doubled my money so far. No, gold doesn't pay interest. But interest is for old people. Young people need to invest in things that are going to increase in asset value. Since the dollar has been going down steadily since the genius has been in the Whitehouse, gold has been going up and up and up and up.

Try an exchange traded fund (ETF) at any brokerage. I trade GLD oftentimes.

There are indeed several ways to do this, but the risk is geat.

In my opinion the best way is to buy shares in a gold mining company, but the broker commission on small purchases will be considerable. Sharebuilder is $4.00 a transaction. ABX and NEM are the top companies.

GLD is an index fund. Again Sharebuilder. This is perhaps the best way to buy gold. Very liquid. But I would personally prefer buying ABX, the premier gold mining company.

You can also buy the physical gold and stuff it into a safe deposit box in a secure bank. But the bid ask spread is very high, especially for small amounts. Ebay would be a good option for making purchases. I do not recommend this option.

you invest in physical gold as insurance against catostrophic financial upheaval. not for investment.

to participate in the rise in gold prices, you are best in invest in shares of producing gold companies.
the shares will go up in better percentage than physical gold.
The best way to do this investing is to buy a no-load precious metals mutual fund.

I live in Canada, I get mine from the investment dept of my bank, no purchase commission, no sales commision, and the share price for the mutual fund is reported at the bank website every day.

you should be able to find equivalent funds in the US.

I am a gold Bug, I invest in Precious metals mutual funds, and I am watching the market very carefully because I will buy $600,000 Cdn in the precious metals fund very soon.

Investing in Gold is not like putting money in your savings account at the local bank, it is an investment and has risks. If gold is down and you want to take your money, just because a bank that invests in gold has the insurance that you require for reputability"securities investor protection corporation" doesn't mean you get your money back. Just so your clear.
