If you have no ideas then indeed shares of a mutual fund or index fund would be the best choice. But not just any one will do. Some perform much better than others. I particularly like RSP among index funds and PENNX among mutual funds. Also GAM and TDX among closed end funds. But depending on your financial goals other may be more appropriate than these.

Without having choices to select from it is difficult to say. The universe of shares to choose from is maybe as many as 20,000 or maybe more.

Tell you what, select several index funds with different investment strategies.

It will all depend on your risk level, understanding of the market, and how much time you're willing to spend on doing your own research.
