Which stock advisers to trust?
Hi all,

I'm new to investing and stocks. I see so many "gurus" on TV and magazines giving advice and recommending stocks, but which one to trust? I read in another place that Pat Dorsey is good. What do you think? Who do you recommend? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't trust any of them.

Either pick your own stocks based on what companies you believe are good (See the book "Rule 1")

or

buy a stock index fund that follows the S&P 500.

I would not particularly trust any of them. Certainly, they sometimes have good ideas that can be investigated. Other times you will find that their ideas are not so good. Taking advice on blind faith is not a recommended proceedure for increasing ones wealth.

All advisers are right... SOMETIMES. Try one and learn.

Here is how to do it yourself. Find a sector in a strong up trend and then find stocks in that sector that are in strong up trends. When the stock falls below a 100 moving average sell and find another in a strong up trend.

Hilary Kramer is one of the best around. You can see her recommendations at money.aol.com as well as at her own website. Her recommendations are for (long-term) investors as opposed to "traders."

Most of the information that gurus share are speculative. Those that have done the work of finding the best picks aren't willing to share the answer quickly. But what you can take away from them is a general idea about each stock, fund, or index. Then do your own research. Look at past performance (not a guarantee of future returns), company's SEC filings, and annual report. Some quick items to look at are Beta, Standard Deviation, Alpha and R-Squared. Each of these things tell you something about the stock's risk and return factors as well as how it MIGHT perform under current market conditions.

Im all about learning for myself. So I choose to listen to those who encourage the same. Its not enough that the 'guru' tells me to do the research before listening to me....but actually tells me why they think their investment is sound and the analysis they put into it.
This is why I started out reading and watching Jim Cramer.

Spock (rhp)
none of 'em.

any adviser has to peddle his wares to so many thousands of people in order to make a living that his advice is useless by the time you get it.

learn to do own stock picking -- far more profitable in the long run.
