Consider the only two logical possibilities: either you will match or beat the market average, or you will fail to do so. Historical data reveals that whether they are aware of it or not, most individuals will fail to beat the market by selecting individual companies and stocks themselves. If you track the performance of so-called stock experts such as active mutual fund managers, you will see that they are typically worse than the market average. If you do expect to beat the market, you are expected to know more than most investors and need to carry out a lot of time-consuming research, but even then it would still be statistically unlikely that you will exceed the average. Whenever some individuals beat the average in a given year, the primary cause is usually due to luck, like winning from a lottery ticket, because the same individuals tend not to repeat these winnings over a longer period.
The rational choice for most investors is to buy and hold a stock index. The benefit of investing in the index is that you are very likely to beat most active investors. Index investing is also low cost and simple to do. ETFs are stocks which track market indices. Common ETFs include IVV and SPY which track the S&P500 index, and QQQQ which tracks the Nasdaq 100 index. Look for ETFs which track other indices as well. |

I recommend going to www.sharebuilder.com and just browsing their website. You can use their research feature to look up stocks from .01 to .99, or 'penny stocks'. That's what I did last February and I joined their plan - Basic is free, with trades costing $4 each, or you can join other plans where trades are cheaper, but there is a small monthly subscription. I've actually made money and I don't really know anything about the market at all! |

Run a screen (I like Yahoo!'s stock screener) and use good criteria to determine which companies have good stats.
I typically want companies to have:
20% Return on Equity
Low Debt/Equity (less than 0.5)
Solid profit margin (at least 15%)
There are a lot of other things you can narrow down as well, looking for companies that have existed for at least ten years is a good idea, since it means that they've proven they're capable of doing business. Warren Buffett also looks for whether he thinks they'll last another ten years, too. Hot stocks aren't usually under that category. |

This is what I did. I watched the stock on TV everyday. After about three years and several months I chose the stock to buy. Suntrust and it was like 33.7 back in 1995 The stock now is flucuating at 75.+ Now that is what I call a good choice of stock. |
