Which stocks should i buy now?

you're asking the wrong question for the wrong reason to the wrong crowd. heck someone has already recommended you GM.
my advice, keep your cash, read a bunch of investment books and then find out for yourself which stocks to buy into.
furthermore, even is anyone knows which stocks would grow fast, would we even tell you? i wont.

Investing and "grow really fast" don't go well together. Personally I would invest in an ETF. Claymore Global Yield Hog. Check it out on Claymore web-site.

If you don't know anything about stocks, you need to speak a financial planner or stock broker first - stocks can be VERY EMOTIONAL, especially now.
If you want to do this on your own, research ETFs, they are a little less risky.
If you're determined to put the $40K into stocks - then diversify the companies AND the industries! Picking 5 companies who manufacture cars (or which are auto related/dependent on the auto industry) won't get you anywhere.
You need to decide what your level/comfort of risk is before taking any drastic action - and don't forget about putting some $ in foreign markets as well as domestic ones.
If you can't find anything on moneycentral.com or yahoo/financial - check sharebuilder.com for info.
Last, but certainly not least - DO NOT RUSH INTO ANYTHING and you're going to have to wait out the economy for at least another 5-8 years before you see the kinds of returns you're probably looking for (although now is the time to invest if you can risk losing the $40K because the long term pay off should be pretty high). If you can wait it out that long, you'll start to see some payoff for your work/patience and if you get good financial advice, you'll be doing really well in 15-20 years.
