I'm doing a project for economics and would like help deciding which stocks to purchase. I have $50,000 and I must pick at least 4 stocks to spend it on for a period of 9 weeks.
My econ teacher also said whoever earned the most money would get extra credit as well as whoever lost the most money would get extra credit.... but let's try to get money in this case.

These are five of the lasted picks from the Yahoo group "ComputerProgramPicks" during the past week. These stocks have better than a 50% chance of being sold with a gain of more than 4 times the ones sold with a loss when a sell signal occurs. I do not know what they will do during the next 9 weeks. Research In Motion (symbol RIMM). Walgreens is certainly a good one, but may not be that much price appreciation in 9 weeks- I think it's a long term pick (symbol is WAG). Westell Technologies (WSTL), Capital One Financial (COF). Really, quite difficult to pick for just the next 9 weeks. But there surely is some growth opportunity with these. Good luck with your Econ Class. I did the same thing myself my senior year in HS. |

I can tell you with some certainty where the market will be in a year or five or ten, but no-one knows where it will be 9 weeks from now! (If they did, it would cease to be an "efficient" market, and it wouldn't work any more).
However, you might consider "buying" $10,000 worth each of the five highest-yielding/lowest priced Dow components. The logic behind this is that they tend to return close to 18% a year, long-term, so if luck is on your side you have a fair chance of turning $50,000 into $52,000 in just nine weeks.

POT, CF (Fertilizer/Chemical)
MDR, JEC, ABB (E&C-Engineering/Construction)
HOLX, TTG, MR (Medical Devices/Tech)
PCU, X, ATI, FCX (Metals-Steel,Copper,Titanium)
